Hayley Brown's family:

Until yesterday, the physicians were not optimistic. Sitting just behind John, with the plane angled on its back toward the left side, Hayley was not ejected as the plane broke apart, as Liam and Julia were on the other side; her head and body received unimaginable blunt force trauma.

Yesterday, surprising her doctors, Hayley opened her eyes and began following commands. She can respond with yes-no blinks, and gets them right every time. She recognizes her mom and dad, and is aware of what is going on around her. She can hold up two fingers in a peace sign, and move her extremities on command. With these signs, we are optimistic that every day will show improvement. Yay!

She has had surgery for her left ankle and debridement for a serious infection in her right leg. She is wearing a cervical collar for neck soft tissue damage, which will heal. We don't know if she will need surgery or a brace for her L1-2 lumbar fracture, and her C6 compression fracture is not of concern. Her pneumonia has cleared up, her lungs are working well, and today she might be taken off her ventilator.

Hayley is a bright, loving, outgoing, determined and already accomplished young woman. She has a history of showing determination to follow a path to completion, whether in sports, academia or her charitable activities. She is using these skills now, she will need all her skills as she heals over the next few months, and with the help of your prayers, we are all finishing up the details of our miracle.

We're grateful for the outpouring of love, support and prayers from the Liga family, and all those in Sinaloa who were part of the 'Milagro'. I have been holding my breath, in an altered and unreal state, since the moment I heard the plane was in the river. Knowing that in the darkness and bewilderment there is always a higher purpose and a great opportunity.

Thanks to everyone for their good wishes and prayers. Liga is not in 'jeopardy' as the AOPA report indicates. Liga will be even stronger in the future. Go team.

  3. I am overjoyed to hear about Haley's improvement. I do not know your family and have only met Haley a few times in Dr. distin office, as I am a patient there, but when I heard the news about the crash Haley was immediately placed heavily upon my heart and I have been praying for her daily. I am so happy to hear God's grace ishown to your family and I hope Haley's recovery is swift, she is a truly delightful young lady and I enjoyed her at Dr Dustin's office very much. I hope she will be able to return to her normal life as quickly as possible and look forward to seeing her again. God bless you and your family. Holly VanBenschotenn

  5. ‎Hayley is now Day 10 post-accident, awake and following commands. We absolutely know that she will have 100% recovery; she and the Lord are making that happen.

This morning she tried to get out of bed when Chris, her cousin was speaking with her. Go girl!

  7. LOL: trying to climb out of bed and giving peace signs! Sounds like Hayley for sure. I rejoice with you on her progress and will have a smile all day tomorrow as I tell all the folks in Modesto who keep asking how she's doing. She's got a tough road ahead of her, but she has what it takes- true grit and some wonderful family and friends to help her along. Strength, love and peace to all of you as you move through the healing process,
    Kate and John

  10. Hayley is unchanged, except that her fever has been down for over 24 hours. She is being kept sedated until she is stable enough for spinal surgery which we hope will be soon. She are still not making contact with us, but we hope and trust that once the sedation is reduced and her surgeries completed, she will be back. Her high school graduation was today; although neither girl could attend, she and Julia received a standing ovation from their classmates. We are living one day at a time, one hour at a time, and are grateful for your prayers.

A blog was created for us and to show support for our kids. I know when they can, the kids will start fundraising for the fishermen who saved their lives. http://miracleonriofuerte.blogspot.com/

  11. My sister, Jeanette and I, offered prayers in church today. We are John's sisters. Along with our other sister, Cathie, we are praying for Hayley and Julia each day. We pray for their strength to see them through their full recoveries. They sound like amazing girls with great spirit!

  12. Hayley, Julia and Liam and all recovering at different stages. Liam is still recovering from post-trauma as well as a fractured clavicle. Julia is in rehab working on mobilizing after surgeries, especially her spinal surgery. Hayley is beginning to respond to commands and beginning to be aware of her environment. She still needs surgery on her spine. We pray for John's family, for the complete recovery of our young warriors who survived this terrible ordeal, and we send our love to the fishermen who saved their lives.

The Fishermen's Fund is, for now, being administered by myself (Hayley's grandma and Liga president) with all funds to be spent for the family. The fund will be transferred to Liga when we can. It is be governed by a local Liga member who will make sure the funds are being sent directly to the schools and that the kids are attending.

We will set up funds for the kids as well, since we have received direct inquiries on how they can be helped. Check www.miracleonriofuerte/blogspot.com for updates.
