  1. Liga, thanks for creating this blog for us. I have to say that after being a Policeman for 35 years and flying for about 30 this is the first time my wife really seemed troubled by an event so close to home. I think that is saying a lot about the accident we experienced.

I am lucky to have had so many pilots and other friends, Liga and otherwise, to talk to. No one can ever understand why bad things happen to good people. I am lucky that I can talk to Cindy and allow her to share her concerns and mine with her. My experience tells me this will help me and my friends through just the ugliest of all situations.

God Bless John, Heyley, Liam, and Julia

  2. Many of you know people who fly with both the Flying Sams and with LIGA. It is with great sadness that I have to report to you that LIGA suffered a tragic accident this weekend.

One of their planes with 4 on board crashed while flying from El Fuerte, their base of operations, to one of their remote clinics, El Carizo. The pilot was fatally injured, and the three passengers are in stable condition in the hospital.
The pilot was John Slater, and the passengers were, Liam Guzman, Jacy Brown, and Zulia Powers (as reported by the Mexican press).

Our hearts, concerns, and prayers go out to them, and their families. We wish a speedy and complete recovery for the survivors.

I will ensure that LIGA knows the Sams stand ready to assit LIGA in any way we can. I believe we are all diminished by the loss of even one.

  5. Dear Liga Members and friends:
We have to continue praying for Liam, Julia, and Hayley, as well as for John Frederic Slater's soul.
This has been a tragic episode, however, it is very commendable to die for such a noble cause as helping the indigent with their medical/dental ailments. The World would be better if we had more people like these kind souls, trying to do their best for their fellow beings.
    God Bless!

  6. Our hearts go out to those affected by the unfortunate accident, and we hope their recovery is speedy and full.
If any of the injured needs an orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Donald Hales of the Summit Spine Center in Flagstaff, Az, is an excellent one. His phone # is 1 877 303 SPINE.

  7. This has been so hard for us! I keep thiking what if this was my grandson who is the same age as Julia and Hayley and is so looking forward to finishing High School and going off to college? This is such a tender and wonderful time in their lives for making great memories and learning to function in the adulut world. How could I cope if this was one of my own!!? I wasn't even down there this past weekend, but I am still very affected!

Two of my family members also have asked me if I think I should continue to fly down to Mexico. I can see the conern in their eyes. I tell them not to worry, but they do look concerned!

Sometimes I think only those who fly down there and know the satisfaction of doing our good work would truly understand.

All of us have deep concerns for John's family as they grieve. We continue to send our support to Hayley who is still trying to mend herself. So many are grateful that Liam's injuries are not worse than they were and we are all pulling for Julia who will be working in rehab toward recovery.

  8. My prayers are with the families and friends of John, Hayley, Julia, and Liam. As part of the Liga family I've worked with all of them. All four have given so much to others. Thanks to them the world is a better place.

I can't imagine the pain that their families are going thru. To John's family, a loss of life; to the injured families the uncertainty of their children's health must be so difficult to grasp. We keep praying for peace in the hearts of John's loved ones and prayers for a speedy and healthy recovery to Hayley, Julia, and Liam.

My husband suffered a head injury in 2006 (coma for a week, rehab for over a year). His recovery was very difficult not only for him but also for his family. We took things one day at a time. There were no guarantees for his recovery but love, support, and care were key in his recovery. Six years since his accident he is a proud father and productive employee at Boeing.

My prayers go out to John's family and friends. I will keep praying and wishing for a speedy and complete recovery for Hayley, Julia, and Liam.

    Hugs to all

  9. I was fortunate enough to arrive home in time to attend my usual Mass Sunday evening after the clinic. The deacon included all of you in the Prayers of the Faithful at my request and we continue to pray for you. I can't be there in person to give a hug, cook a meal, run errands for you or do other things to help, but I can send as many spiritual hugs as possible. I know personally what wonderful people Liam and Hayley are (I missed getting to see you at San Blas, Liam!) and it sounds like Julia is cut from the same cloth. John was also a rare gem. Thank you all for what you have given, not only the folks you have helped serve in Mexico, but to all the rest of us. You have each made Liga a little more special. And thanks to you, Janet and Ernie and the other family members I don't know as well for sharing the precious gifts of John, Hayley, Julia and Liam with us.
    Peace,
    Kate Bolton

  11. This is a message to the family members of Hayley, Julia and Liam:

I heard about the accident just shortly before I left on my summer travel. I am currently at Our Lady of Lourdes in France and I have lit 5 candles with Liga in mind. One for each (Hayley, Julia and Liam), one for John's family and the fifth for Liga members collectively so that we may all heal physically and emotionally. With utmost respect for the families involved, I am offering to bring some holy water from the fountain of Lourdes if you think it would provide some solace or comfort. Please email me at cruzinrx@hotmail.com with your mailing address should you decide to accept, No pressure...just offering prayer.

    Kind Regards

    Patricia Cruz

  12. I know that Julia and Hayley are working hard at their recovery. It's now been 3 weeks and their journey continues. Rehabilitation is hard work and I am certain it is a real emotional roller coaster!

For their families and the family of John Slater, things will never be the same as that day before the crash.

You are all in our thoughts and prayers!

    Warmly,
    Pat Spier

  13. Voicing the sadness and struggle is as important as sharing the triumphs. Crying and rejoicing, laughter and tears, and some good old fashioned anger tossed in for good measure all go together on that rocky road to recovery. Life is not fair (ain't that the truth), but we get by with a little help from our friends...and that adds up to a lot. If only we could take away this time of trial and give Hayley her wonderful summer and beyond back! We can only trust what has been taken away will be given back a hundred fold in one form or another

  14. That is really well put!

It is hard to get a perspective when there seems to be no reason and when it is so unfair! These three young people are an example of what is right about their generation! Then to know what they have gone through makes me so sad, but it also makes me angry! And John's daughters will not have their father to be by their side in journeys ahead. UNFAIR is right!
