  1. Julia's surgeries on June 8 were both successful. She had surgery to fuse 5 vertebrae and to reattach severed ligaments. The doctors also operated on the right orbital bone to repair the fracture. Her blood counts are good so at this point it looks like her spleen laceration should heal on its own. Her broken left foot will be placed in a boot. Julia will need surgery on her right knee to repair multiple torn ligaments. This will be done as soon as medically appropriate but probably not for several weeks. Julia has an excellent prognosis for a full recovery and continues to maintain her positive attitude and is focused on rehabilitation.

I know it will be some time before she has recovered but its great to hear that she is making wounderful progress. I am on the east coast this month but plan on checking in with her when I get back in July. Please give he my love and best wishes for a speedy recovery.

  2. Wonderful news! It’s been a horrifying week for your whole family and seeing a positive status update was very uplifting. I met Julia and have worked with her at the El Carrizo clinic. She has a delightful personality with a heart of gold, and always smiling! I look forward to seeing the updates as she progresses. With her positive attitude, I’m sure her improvement will be rapid! Our thoughts and prayers continue for her full recovery. Please tell Julia the Blythe’s say hi, and our thoughts and prayers continue for her. We also pray for your family’s strength during her journey through rehabilitation.

  3. Hayley Brown's family:

Until yesterday, the physicians were not optimistic. Sitting just behind John, with the plane angled on its back toward the left side, Hayley was not ejected as the plane broke apart, as Liam and Julia were on the other side; her head and body received unimaginable blunt force trauma.

Yesterday, surprising her doctors, Hayley opened her eyes and began following commands. She can respond with yes-no blinks, and gets them right every time. She recognizes her mom and dad, and is aware of what is going on around her. She can hold up two fingers in a peace sign, and move her extremities on command. With these signs, we are optimistic that every day will show improvement. Yay!

She has had surgery for her left ankle and debridement for a serious infection in her right leg. She is wearing a cervical collar for neck soft tissue damage, which will heal. We don't know if she will need surgery or a brace for her L1-2 lumbar fracture, and her C6 compression fracture is not of concern. Her pneumonia has cleared up, her lungs are working well, and today she might be taken off her ventilator.

Hayley is a bright, loving, outgoing, determined and already accomplished young woman. She has a history of showing determination to follow a path to completion, whether in sports, academia or her charitable activities. She is using these skills now, she will need all her skills as she heals over the next few months, and with the help of your prayers, we are all finishing up the details of our miracle.

We're grateful for the outpouring of love, support and prayers from the Liga family, and all those in Sinaloa who were part of the 'Milagro'. I have been holding my breath, in an altered and unreal state, since the moment I heard the plane was in the river. Knowing that in the darkness and bewilderment there is always a higher purpose and a great opportunity.

Thanks to everyone for their good wishes and prayers. Liga is not in 'jeopardy' as the AOPA report indicates. Liga will be even stronger in the future. Go team.

  4. This is very good news Janet! I have also been holding my breath, so your post brings even more tears.... tears of relief! Please make sure Hayley is told that there are so many people chering her on from the sidelines, from the humble fishermen who met her at the river, to those Liga nurses and doctors at IMSS, to the ones helping in Los Mochis, with her transport to Liga member's family members and friends. She is prayed for, thought of and loved by so many, from near and from far!

Her strength and determination along with your support will guide her each day. One day at a time. I am sure you all are waiting for her to be able to speak to you! Please keep posting about her progress. It is uplifting and we are wondering each day. This is an ongoing miracle!

It is obvious from the events this past week that Liga is a big, compassionate and strong family. The other statements are just for drama, we all recognize this.

    Warmly, Pat Spier

P.S. I have to fix my account so it doesn't come up as "Grandma Pat" each time. My kids have a blog also about my grandkids.

  8. Julia, I'm glad to hear your surgeries have gone well,as well. You, just as Hayley, have faced a tremendously difficult challenge with grace and courage. I know you have a lot of healing ahead of you. I hope your spirit continues to stay strong and bright as you and your family move through this healing.
And Liam, that goes for you too. I loved the picture of you heading into school-looking good!

  9. Hayley has had a temporary setback over the past few days. Her temp spiked, her mental status regressed and she stopped responding to stimuli. The suspicion was that the infection from the abscess in her left leg spread to her brain, possibly meningitis. So Hayley is busy fighting this infection and has not had the energy to regain her brain function, but as soon as the infection subsides, we know she will continue on her course. She had a third surgery on her right leg this morning, and her temp is coming back down to normal. Please keep holding the highest outcome thoughts for both Julia and Hayley and we thank you for your prayers.

  12. I'm sorry to hear about the set back. I have our "new" adopted stray kittie on my lap who is burble purring loud enough to hear in the next room over semi-loud music. It is such a comforting sound, I wish I could send it your way. Hopefully, the ICU is allowing you to play favorite music or sounds for Hayley to help her stay connected to the outside world and not just hear hospital machine noise. How is Julia doing? I hope you are doing ok, Janet. I can't imagine how hard it has been for you and the other family members as well.
    Peace, Kate

  13. Greetings and Happy Fathers Day to all the amazing dads in the Liga family.

A friend started another blog for us, so I will be posting there. It was too much to post to Facebook, that blog and to the Liga blog.

  14. Hayley is now up in a wheelchair. She has a trach and is communicating via a board. She is now doing more physical therapy.

Cut and Pasted from other Blog with permission from Janet.
    Per Janet Lapp on 6/27:

Hayley wrote to her good friend Gracie, without prompting: "Thanks for coming to see me. I love you. Hayley" THEN she was asked if there was anything she wanted: She wrote "When can you wash my hair?" and then she was asked "Is there anything else you'd like?" She wrote" "Be quiet." Everybody is always yapping at her with great intentions, but it must be annoying .....lol.

She waved to her doctor and gave him a heart sign, she points things out accurately, is doing most physio exercises on her own. Her attention and focus are good, eye hand coordination excellent, communicates clearly, orientation intact. We are so excited for how well she is doing.

"Doctors give the diagnosis, God gives the prognosis."

Although her fever is slightly elevated, they think they know where it's coming from, so chances are that will be under control. Sutures came out, incisions healing well. Her catheter was removed yesterday, and she is doing well on her own. She has still a couple of open wounds with dressings, her boot is on her fractured ankle, and she wears her brace awaiting a spinal fusion L1-2.

If you are reading this, could you possibly write back in the comments section on the other blog (http://miracleonriofuerte.blogspot.com) instead of sending me emails, then we can save your comments. I promise I will read your messages to Hayley, it encourages and supports her to hear them. Please write.
